A Step Forward: BSJA Updates Breeches Rules as the Momentum Builds for Change
The equestrian world has long been steeped in tradition, but Equitas has been delighted to receive an alert of a modern shift for British Showjumping (BSJA). In response to ongoing calls for greater inclusivity and practicality, the BSJA has updated its dress code to permit the wearing of dark-colored breeches in competitions. This progressive step is a significant milestone in Equitas’ “Why Can’t We?” campaign, a movement that has been advocating for such changes to outdated rules across disciplines.
Our campaign began with a simple question: why can’t equestrian sports embrace inclusivity and progress as many other sports have? While strides have been made, our focus remains on challenging conventions that no longer serve the athletes, the sport, or its future. Dark-colored breeches, for instance, offer riders a more practical, accessible, and inclusive option, aligning with the needs and preferences of many equestrians today.
Progress in Ireland: Beginning of True Change?
Closer to home, the Showjumping Association of Ireland (SJAI) has also introduced permission to wear darker breeches during league shows. While currently only applicable to league shows, we look forward to perhaps this being permitted across all competitions in the future and applaud it as a welcome step forward.
Eventing Ireland set the gold standard here in Ireland as the first national body to break away from traditional restrictions, amending its rules in 2024 to allow riders to wear dark-coloured jodhpurs or breeches in competitions. Their trailblazing efforts continue to resonate, proving that meaningful change starts with a single step.
A Wider Lens: Why the “Why Can’t We?” Campaign Matters
The updates from BSJA and SJAI are reflective of a broader movement towards equity in sport. Across the board, other disciplines and organisations have made significant progress in embracing inclusivity—removing restrictions that alienate participants or fail to serve the needs of today’s athletes.
Our campaign has always been about more than dark breeches; it’s about asking the critical questions that drive meaningful change:
Why can’t equestrian sports embrace diversity and inclusivity in dress codes, equity and accessibility?
Why can’t we challenge outdated traditions when they no longer align with the values of the community?
Why can’t we build a sport that works for everyone, not just a select few?
Celebrating Progress, Continuing the Work
The introduction of dark breeches in BSJA competitions and league shows in Ireland is a moment to celebrate. It reflects the growing recognition that progress in equestrian sports is not just possible—it’s necessary. But it is also a reminder that there is more work to be done.
These changes, while meaningful, are just the beginning. As equestrians, advocates, and allies, we must continue to champion change across every facet of the industry. Equitas remains committed to driving this transformation, being a voice for women, and ensuring that the equestrian world becomes a space of equity and empowerment for all who love the sport.
Because when we ask, “Why Can’t We?” the answer should always be: we can.
