At the Heart of the RDS: Berney Bros at 150 Years of the Dublin Horse Show

Day four of the Dublin Horse Show marks more than just another busy day at the RDS — it’s a celebration of 150 years of equestrian heritage, and for Berney Bros, it’s one of the liveliest weeks of their year. Their stand, thrumming with visitors, gleams with saddles, bridles, and a buzz that only comes from decades of tradition meeting the excitement of the present.

Behind the counter — and the camera — is Emma. “I’ve been working with Berney’s for the last seven years,” she says, smiling.

“I came during TY and never left — they never got rid of me.” Her role? Running the social media for the entire Berny Bros brand. It’s a job she relishes for its pace and unpredictability. “I love the challenge. Trends are always changing, and keeping on top of them keeps me on my toes.”

This week offers no shortage of content. The stand is constantly filled with smiling faces, and Berny Bros sponsored Wednesday and Thursday’s Connemara classes, ensuring there’s always a new angle to capture. But what makes the brand truly special, Emma says, is its heritage. “The generations, and how they are able to create something… it’s brilliant. That transcends time.”

Two new products have been causing a stir. First, the Sovereign — a fully lined show saddle designed for exceptional comfort and security. “You don’t want to get out of it,” Emma laughs, recalling how one visitor, Merrin, had to be coaxed away after spending ten minutes perched in it. The second is the Legacy, with a suede seat, suede knees, and a suede tie pad at the back. Also built for security and comfort, it’s already winning loyal fans — though Emma still swears by the Sovereign.

Saddles aren’t the only highlight. The new Comfort Bridle, launched late last year, has been a strong seller. Built with a memory foam and anatomically shaped headpiece, plus a padded browband and noseband, it’s been “really, really popular,” Emma says.

Part of Berney Bros’ appeal lies in what you don’t see in many modern brands: everything is handmade in their workshop in Killcullen. “It’s not bought in from a foreign country where you’re just reselling it,” Emma says. “Everything is adjusted. We can do repairs. We can do everything in our little shop.”

That sense of craftsmanship, paired with a brand identity that lives both in the saddle and online, keeps Berny Bros rooted in its tradition while looking ahead. And as Emma chats with customers, grins for photos, and keeps her social channels buzzing, it’s clear she’s proud to be part of the ride.
