Bridle Up Hope: Las Cruces Equestrian Program Empowers Women and Girls Through Horses

LAS CRUCES, New Mexico – Women and girls looking to step into the world of horses—or simply escape the hustle of city life—now have a unique opportunity to do so through Bridle Up Hope, a national nonprofit that offers transformative equestrian programs in Las Cruces and beyond.

For many participants, it’s more than just learning to ride—it’s about building confidence, resilience, and a sense of community.

"If you've always wanted to be around horses but never had the opportunity, this is the perfect chance," said Penny Payne, a recent graduate of the program. "It's a safe, welcoming environment where you'll not only learn, but also connect with other women—many of whom may become lifelong friends. And as any rider will tell you, horse friends are the best friends."

A Program That Goes Beyond Riding

Bridle Up Hope combines hands-on equestrian training with life-skills development, self-renewal activities, and personal growth, all inspired by principles from Stephen R. Covey’s bestselling book, The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People.

While the program welcomes those who simply want to enjoy time in the saddle, it also serves as a safe haven for women facing challenges or transitions in life.

"Every girl or woman who comes here has something different they're working through," explained Kelly Koerper, managing director of the Las Cruces chapter. "It's incredible to watch the horses help them do exactly that. I've seen shy, withdrawn girls walk out a month later with newfound confidence, leading these magnificent animals with ease."

For others, the program provides a peaceful retreat.

"Horses demand that we be present," Koerper added. "If our minds are elsewhere, we might get stepped on or lose control. That need to stay in the moment is exactly what some women need—a space where they can just breathe and be."

Growing the Herd: More Women, More Impact

Since launching, the Las Cruces chapter has already welcomed over 20 participants, but the program is ready to expand and reach even more women and girls.

"We've put in the work, made improvements, and now we're ready to open the doors wider," Koerper said. "It’s like that saying from Field of Dreams—‘If you build it, they will come.’ And we’re ready."
