Equitas is proud to announce that Helen Kearney, a decorated Para-Equestrian dressage rider, will be joining our International Women’s Day event. Helen’s journey in the equestrian arena is marked by resilience, determination, and an unwavering commitment to excellence. Born on 6 June 1989 and hailing from Dunlavin, Co. Wicklow, Ireland, Helen has overcome significant challenges—including a lifelong battle with Friedreich’s Ataxia—to emerge as an influential figure in equestrian sport.

Helen’s career began at the age of 10 when her passion for riding was first ignited. Despite her diagnosis at 13 with a rare, progressive degenerative condition, she continued to pursue her love for horses. With the support of her family and her own determination, Helen embraced the sport, competing in dressage, show jumping, and cross-country events during her formative years. Her early experiences provided her with a broad education in riding and laid the foundation for a career defined by perseverance and grit.

After transitioning to dressage—a discipline that has allowed her to continue competing at a high level despite worsening health—Helen embarked on her journey in Para-Equestrian sport in 2008. Initially classified as a Grade IV rider, her classification evolved over time as she refined her skills and adapted to her changing needs. Notably, Helen has competed internationally, including a memorable junior international event in Millfield, England, where her performance earned her recognition as the best international rider. Her achievements culminated in a historic moment at the London 2012 Paralympic Games, where she secured three medals, underscoring her position as one of the sport’s leading competitors.

The story of Helen Kearney is not only one of personal triumph but also a powerful statement on the importance of inclusivity in equestrian sport. Her journey challenges traditional narratives and underscores that equestrianism is a space for all riders—regardless of the obstacles they may face. With the recent introduction of a promising drug that has shown the ability to slow or halt the progression of Friedreich’s Ataxia, there is renewed hope for enhanced accessibility and support for riders like Helen. This development symbolizes a broader shift within the sport, where innovation, medical progress, and inclusivity are converging to create a more equitable future for all equestrians.

At Equitas, we believe that every rider deserves the space to excel, irrespective of the physical challenges they encounter. Helen’s participation in our International Women’s Day event is a testament to this belief. Her story is hard-hitting and real—a reminder that success is achieved through perseverance, support, and a community that champions diversity in all its forms. By welcoming Helen to our event, we are reaffirming our commitment to celebrating not only the achievements of women in equestrian sport but also the strength and determination that inspires every rider across the spectrum.

This International Women’s Day, Equitas will shine a spotlight on the vital role that inclusivity plays in equestrianism. Helen Kearney’s remarkable career, marked by significant achievements against daunting odds, serves as an inspiration to riders and enthusiasts worldwide. It is a call to action for the industry to continue breaking down barriers, ensuring that opportunities in the equestrian world are available to everyone. We invite all members of the equestrian community to join us in celebrating this commitment to fairness, equity, and the unyielding spirit of all equestrians.
