Community Mourns 17‑Year‑Old Isabelle O’Callaghan Following Horse‑Riding Accident

A sombre mood has descended on Kerry and the wider community following the tragic death of 17‑year‑old Isabelle O’Callaghan of Rockfield, just outside Killarney. Isabelle, a student at St Brigid’s Secondary School and dedicated member of Kingdom Pony Club, died on Thursday evening in what has been described as a freak accident while riding a horse at her family home on the Tralee Road.

Described by her school as “quiet yet determined, with the most gorgeous smile and a wonderful sense of humour,” Isabelle was known for her passion for horses and her bright, kind presence. One teacher reflected: “She had such a bright future ahead of her… being your teacher was such a privilege.”

Fr Kieran O’Brien, speaking on behalf of local clergy, said the community was “numb” with grief, noting that Isabelle’s life was cut short doing something she loved. Members of the O’Callaghan family are well‑known locally through their business, Killarney Coaches.

Tralee District Councillor Martin Grady described the news as “an awful tragedy” and said there were no words to convey the community’s sorrow.

Among the outpouring of empathy was Paula Silles, who lost her son Luke in a tragic drowning last month. She shared: “Such heart‑breaking news. May that beautiful young girl rest in peace. We feel their pain… sending our love.”

Online tributes similarly remembered Isabelle as “never without a smile” and spoke of their profound sadness at such a bright life ending too soon.

Funeral arrangements have been confirmed. Isabelle’s remains will lie at O’Shea’s Funeral Home in Killarney on Sunday, 29 June, from 7 pm to 9 pm. The funeral procession will arrive at St Mary’s Cathedral on Monday 30 June at 11:45 am, in advance of a 12 noon Requiem Mass. She will be laid to rest in Aghadoe Lawn Cemetery.

The Health and Safety Authority (HSA) has been made aware of the incident and has initiated an investigation into its circumstances.

At Equitas, we are deeply saddened by the loss of Isabelle O’Callaghan. We send our heartfelt condolences to her family, friends, school community, and everyone who knew her. There are no words strong enough for a moment like this—only our support and thoughts in the days ahead.
