Pioneering Achievements
The journey of female jockeys at Cheltenham began with Caroline Beasley, who made history in 1983 by becoming the first woman to ride a winner at the Festival, guiding Eliogarty to victory in the Foxhunters' Chase. This milestone opened the door for future generations of female riders.
In 1987, Gee Armytage made headlines when she won two races at the Cheltenham Festival, taking the Kim Muir Challenge Cup on The Ellier and the Mildmay of Flete Challenge Cup on Gee-A. Her triumphs demonstrated that female jockeys could compete at the highest level.
In 2019, Bryony Frost further strengthened the presence of female jockeys by becoming the first woman to win a Grade 1 race at the Cheltenham Festival. She achieved this feat aboard Frodon in the Ryanair Chase, showcasing her tactical expertise and confidence.
Rachael Blackmore: A Racing Icon
Among the exceptional female jockeys, Rachael Blackmore stands out as a leader in the sport. In 2021, she made history by becoming the first female rider to be the leading jockey at the Cheltenham Festival, securing six victories, including a win in the Champion Hurdle aboard Honeysuckle. Her success continued in 2022 when she became the first woman to win the prestigious Cheltenham Gold Cup, riding A Plus Tard to a memorable victory.
Notable Female Jockeys
- Nina Carberry: Hailing from a racing family, Carberry enjoyed seven Cheltenham Festival wins, including three consecutive Cross Country Chase victories from 2007 to 2009.
- Katie Walsh: With three Festival wins to her name, Walsh's achievements include a notable victory in the 2018 Champion Bumper aboard Relegate.
- Lizzie Kelly: In 2018, Kelly became the first female professional jockey to win at the Cheltenham Festival, guiding Coo Star Sivola to victory in the Ultima Handicap Chase.
- Tabitha Worsley: Another talented jockey, Worsley won the Foxhunters' Chase at the 2021 Cheltenham Festival aboard Cousin Pascal, further solidifying the presence of female riders at the Festival.
