Galway Turns Pink for Breast Cancer Research
Galway Racecourse was painted pink yesterday as racegoers turned out for the annual #RaceInPink day, an event dedicated to supporting the National Breast Cancer Research Institute. Now in its second year, this important fundraiser coincided with the three-day Galway October Festival and drew attendees from all over Ireland and beyond, all with one purpose in mind: raising vital funds to advance breast cancer research.
Hosted on Sunday, October 27th, #RaceInPink is an initiative with a heartfelt mission: to support the National Breast Cancer Research Institute and their work at the Lambe Institute in Galway. Galway Racecourse Manager Michael Moloney spoke of the day’s success, noting that the tremendous turnout from local businesses and the 800 luncheon guests created an uplifting atmosphere of unity and purpose.
“We’re really delighted that this race day was so hugely supported. People came from all over Ireland, with some even flying in from the UK, to support such a great cause,” he said. Reflecting on the day’s impact, Moloney added, “Partnering with the National Breast Cancer Research Institute means supporting a research team who are working to improve breast cancer diagnosis and treatment. The feedback has been fantastic, and we’re thrilled to be part of something that benefits so many.”
Director of Research, Professor Michael Kerin, expressed his gratitude for the event’s growing momentum, acknowledging Galway Racecourse as an essential partner in the institute’s work. “It’s a wonderful example of an established Galway brand coming together with our charity to raise funds,” he said. The research funded by #RaceInPink directly benefits patients, focusing on critical advancements like genetic research, biomarkers, innovative imaging technologies, and breast reconstruction through stem cell research. “These programs are technically demanding and expensive, and we’re incredibly grateful for the ongoing support from funders, the public, and corporate sponsors who believe in what we do,” Professor Kerin added.

In addition to the festivities, #RaceInPink day featured seven exhilarating races, with guests enjoying the full suite of Galway Racecourse’s amenities, from live music and food options to the excitement of the big screen. The event is a true highlight of the October Bank Holiday weekend, bringing together sport, community spirit, and charity.
