His Highness Prince Karim Al-Hussaini, Aga Khan IV, who passed away in Lisbon at the age of 88, was a distinguished figure in religious leadership, philanthropy, and the equestrian world. As the 49th Imam of the Nizari Ismailis, he guided approximately 20 million followers globally, promoting education, healthcare, and economic development. Simultaneously, he elevated the Aga Khan Studs to international acclaim, solidifying their reputation for excellence in horse breeding and racing. His legacy is one of dedication, vision, and lasting impact across multiple spheres.

Born on December 13, 1936, in Geneva, Switzerland, Prince Karim was the eldest son of Prince Aly Khan and Joan Yarde-Buller. He was a direct descendant of the Prophet Mohammed through his daughter Fatima and son-in-law Ali. Educated at Harvard University, he graduated with a degree in Islamic history in 1959. At the age of 20, following the death of his grandfather, Aga Khan III, in 1957, he assumed the title of Aga Khan IV. This responsibility placed him at the helm of an international community, where he focused on fostering progress through education, economic development, and social welfare.

His commitment to service extended into the equestrian world, a passion inherited from his family. In 1960, after the untimely death of his father, Prince Aly Khan, in a car accident, Aga Khan IV took over the family's bloodstock interests. Recognizing the need for strategic focus, he made a significant decision to consolidate the family's racing operations in France, appointing the esteemed François Mathet as his principal trainer. This partnership led to numerous successes, including the achievements of horses like Zeddaan and Kalamoun, who became foundational sires in Thoroughbred breeding.

Following Mathet's passing in 1983, Alain de Royer-Dupré became the Aga Khan's principal trainer. Their collaboration produced some of the most remarkable racehorses of modern times. Zarkava, an unbeaten filly, won the 2008 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe, cementing her place in history. Similarly, Dalakhani, the 2003 Prix du Jockey-Club and Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe winner, further exemplified the breeding excellence fostered under the Aga Khan’s leadership. These achievements were not merely a testament to superior bloodlines but also to his strategic vision and unwavering commitment to excellence.

His impact on the racing world was not limited to training champions; he was also a masterful breeder. His operations saw strategic acquisitions, including the studs of François Dupré, Marcel Boussac, and Jean-Luc Lagardère. These purchases enriched the Aga Khan Studs’ bloodlines, leading to the development of exceptional horses such as Top Ville, Akiyda, and Darshaan. The influence of these bloodlines continues to shape the modern Thoroughbred industry, ensuring that his contributions will be felt for generations to come.

Beyond horse racing, the Aga Khan IV’s leadership extended to humanitarian efforts on a global scale. His establishment of the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN) was a pivotal step in providing essential resources to developing countries. The AKDN employs thousands worldwide, focusing on improving healthcare, education, and economic opportunities. His belief in empowering communities through sustainable development set a precedent for philanthropic efforts across the globe.

His vision also transformed architectural and cultural landscapes. Through initiatives like the Aga Khan Trust for Culture, he championed the preservation of historical sites and promoted contemporary architecture that respects cultural heritage. His patronage extended to the arts, education, and scientific research, always with the aim of fostering a better future for all.

The passing of His Highness the Aga Khan IV marks the end of a significant chapter in both religious leadership and the equestrian world. His contributions have left an indelible mark on countless lives, spanning continents and industries. As the Thoroughbred community reflects on his extraordinary impact, his legacy will continue to influence future generations of breeders, trainers, and enthusiasts. More importantly, his enduring commitment to service, progress, and excellence ensures that his influence will be remembered far beyond the racetrack.

His Highness will be remembered not only as a leader and a breeder of champions but as a visionary who dedicated his life to improving the world around him. His legacy in horse racing, philanthropy, and global development will continue to inspire those who follow in his footsteps, ensuring that his work lives on through the institutions he built and the people he empowered.
