Ireland’s Para Equestrian Women Make Their Mark at Addington CPEDI 3*

When it comes to international competition, there’s a unique kind of pride that comes from watching Irish riders not only show up—but shine. And that’s exactly what happened at Addington CPEDI 3* this past week as three of our Para Equestrian Ireland members—Angela Lyons, Kate Kerr-Horan and Jessica McKenna—travelled to compete in the Grade 3 and 4 Grand Prix tests.

From the moment their boots hit the ground, it was clear that this was more than just another show. It was about partnerships. Preparation. Pride. And these women delivered.

A Dream Debut and a Powerful Partnership

Let’s start with Jessica McKenna and her new ride, D.C.I Cerruti. Making an international debut can be nerve-wracking at the best of times, but this pair didn’t just hold their own—they owned it. With elegance, precision and a touch of flair, they secured not one but three first-place finishes across the week, including the Grand Prix Freestyle with an impressive score of 71+. The judges were consistent in their praise, with artistic and technical marks mirroring each other, and the choreography clearly striking a chord.

There’s something special about a new partnership that clicks early, and this one looks like it’s set to grow from strength to strength.

Consistency, Class and Climbing the Rankings

Angela Lyons and her ever-dashing Woodcroft Santa Cruz were a picture of calm, collected grace across the Grade 4 tests. Starting off in 7th in the opening Grand Prix, Angela kept her foot on the pedal and quietly climbed her way up the leaderboard. By Freestyle Friday, she had secured a top five finish with over 67%—a significant achievement in a highly competitive field. Judges singled out her music and strong riding skills, with standout moments in the medium canter and some very tidy halts.

Angela’s progression throughout the competition showed just how valuable composure and experience can be on the international stage.

Solid Tests and Supple Work from a Promising Pair

In Grade 3, Kate Kerr-Horan and Lykkebo’s Don Akino held their own with maturity and quiet determination. Starting strong with a 3rd place in the Grand Prix—highlighted by supple circles and a confident walk. While perhaps flying slightly under the radar in terms of headlines, this partnership is undeniably one to watch. The harmony between horse and rider is developing beautifully and the potential is evident.

A Team Effort and a Promising Future

Behind every rider is a village—grooms, coaches, family, friends. And this week marked the first international event under new High Performance Director Simone Hession, who expressed her pride in how the riders performed across all three days.

She added: “For the first para dressage international of the year, these three Irish combinations had a good start as we work towards the European Championships in September, in particular Jessica had a super show with three wins of three classes.”

We often talk about winning, but what stood out most from Addington was the sense of momentum. These women didn’t just show up, they evolved throughout the week. And in a sport where progress can be as valuable as medals, that’s worth celebrating.

A huge well done to Jessica, Angela and Kate—and to their horses, who stepped up and danced in the spotlight.

Here’s to more moments like these. More progression. More representation. More Irish flags flying high at para dressage arenas around the world.
