Rachel King Makes History with Landmark Grade 1 Victory in Japan

Rachel King etched her name into the record books Sunday, February 23, 2025, becoming the first female jockey to win a Grade 1 race in Japan after steering Costa Nova to victory in the February Stakes at Tokyo.
The British-born rider, who began her career as an amateur between 2009 and 2013, has since established herself as a globetrotting talent. Her latest triumph follows a recent win in the final leg of the International Jockeys' Challenge at Riyadh on the opening night of the Saudi Cup meeting—adding yet another milestone to her growing list of achievements.
King partnered Costa Nova for trainer Tetsuya Kimura, guiding the horse to a decisive victory, crossing the line just under a length ahead of the competition.
A Historic Moment for Women in Racing
Speaking after her breakthrough win, King expressed her pride in the achievement.
“I feel very privileged to be here, competing at this level. It’s an incredible moment to be the first female jockey to win a Grade 1 in Japan,” she said.
Despite it being her first time riding Costa Nova, King credited the support of the horse’s trainer, team, and previous jockeys for providing valuable insight.
“I did all my homework, and he’s such a straightforward horse. I believe he can progress even further from today.”
She also took a moment to thank the passionate Japanese racing fans who have supported her journey.
“A huge thank you to all the JRA racing fans. Their support last year and this year has been amazing—I couldn’t have won a Grade 1 without them.”
King’s triumph marks a significant moment for female jockeys in Japan and beyond, proving yet again that talent and determination can break down barriers in the sport.
