Rising, Rooted, and Ready: The Women of Kentucky 2025

The Defender Kentucky Three-Day Event is one of the toughest five-stars in the world — and this year’s start list reflects just how competitive the sport has become. Among the 34 horses going forward in the CCI5*-L, 19 are being piloted by women, making up just under 56% of the field.
But it’s not just about numbers. What stands out more are the stories behind these riders — some stepping up to this level for the first time, others bringing forward partnerships built over a decade. It’s a snapshot of where the sport is right now: full of challenge, opportunity, and plenty of riders making their own way through it.
The Youngest in the Field – Cassie Sanger
At just 20 years old, Cassie Sanger is the youngest rider in this year’s five-star field. She’ll be competing with Redfield Fyre, a horse she’s produced herself. Her entry isn’t just a milestone for her — it’s a reminder of how much young riders can achieve with the right mix of talent, support, and opportunity.
For those watching from the wings, especially younger women, Cassie’s presence in Kentucky sends a clear message: you don’t need to wait your turn. With the right backing, you can build your path now.
A Thirteen-Year Bond – Arden Wildasin & Sunday Times
Arden Wildasin’s story looks a little different. She and Sunday Times have been a team for 13 years — and this event marks their five-star debut together. That kind of long-term partnership brings a different kind of strength to the top of the sport.
In a competitive world where quick results often dominate, Arden’s approach reminds us that growth, trust, and patience still matter. It’s proof that there’s more than one way to reach the start box at this level.
First-Time Five-Star Riders: Stepping into the Arena
Cassie and Arden aren’t the only ones making their five-star debuts this year. Joining them are Lucienne Bellissimo, Julie Wolfert, Brooke Burchianti, Mary Bess Davis, and Shannon Lilley — all stepping up to the challenge of Kentucky for the first time.
Also returning is Caroline Pamukcu, an experienced rider, who’s introducing two new horses, HSH Double Sixteen and She's the One, both making their five-star debuts.
Together, these women are part of a shift in the sport — one where new faces and fresh partnerships are stepping into the spotlight. They’re not here to tick boxes. They’re here to compete, to learn, and to push forward — and in doing so, they open doors for the next generation.
