The world of horse racing is full of challenges and opportunities, and Irish jockey Siobhan Rutledge is embracing both as she begins an exciting new chapter in Australia. Earlier this week, she left Ireland to take on a fresh opportunity—one that promises plenty of hard work, growth, and maybe a little homesickness along the way.

Originally from Meath, Siobhan has been making her mark on Irish tracks for years. This year, she secured nine winners, adding to an impressive career that peaked in 2021 with 21 victories. But Siobhan isn’t someone to rest on past success. She’s always looking ahead, ready to push herself further.

Her trainer, John McConnell, has been a key supporter of her journey. At Dundalk last week, after Hasiyna’s win, John spoke with pride about Siobhan’s next step, though it was clear he would miss her.

“She headed off to Australia on last Monday,” he said. “I spoke to her this morning—she was just starting work at 3 a.m.! Tonight’s win is a little bittersweet because she’s not here to ride it. She’s done so much for this horse, and her suggestions—like dropping her back—have been spot on.”

In Brisbane, Siobhan is now working with trainer Chris Munce. For now, her plan is to stay until March, but as John shared, “If it goes really well, she might stay longer. If not, we’ll gladly welcome her back.”

Her departure leaves a space to fill, but it also brings new opportunities for others. Jamie Powell, a talented young jockey, will step in to take on more rides. “Jamie doesn’t ride like an apprentice,” John noted. “This year hasn’t been easy for him, but he’s got real skill, and it’s exciting to start working with him.”

Siobhan’s decision to head to Australia is a bold one. Leaving behind her home, the horses she’s worked with, and the team she knows so well isn’t easy. But this kind of courage is what makes her stand out—not just as a jockey but as a person.

Siobhan, if you’re reading this from Brisbane in the early hours of another busy day, know that Ireland is cheering you on. This adventure could be the start of something truly special.
