The Mental Health Summit Extends to Farming and Agriculture Communities

The mental health crisis in the farming community is a growing concern, as revealed by recent studies. Over half of farmers are experiencing moderate to extremely severe depression, with almost 40% suffering from severe anxiety and stress. The University College Dublin (UCD) survey of more than 250 farmers found that 23.4% were at risk for suicide. The deeply ingrained farm stress, coupled with high attachment to the land, significantly impacts their emotional, psychological, and social well-being.

In light of these alarming statistics, we are thrilled to announce that the Mental Health Summit, initially focused on the equestrian community, is now extending its reach to the farming and agricultural sectors. Scheduled for September 9th and 10th, aligning with World Suicide Prevention Day, the summit aims to create hope through action, providing insights, understanding and support for those struggling in these critical industries.
Imagine a world where mental health is as crucial as physical health. That's the vision of our Mental Health Summit. This isn't just an event; it's a movement dedicated to education, understanding, and compassionate action. With world-class speakers, industry experts, and community members, we will explore and address the mental health challenges unique to the equestrian and farming communities.

Both the equestrian and farming sector's share similar struggles when it comes to mental health. High stress, isolation, and the constant pressure of managing livestock and land contribute to significant mental health challenges. Our summit will bridge these communities, offering tailored support and education to help individuals manage their mental health effectively.

Dr. Tomás Russell and Ms. Alison Stapleton from UCD highlight the necessity of system-level changes and enhanced support for farmers. "We hope to use what we've learned to build effective mental health interventions for farmers and the farming community at large. It's equally important to lobby for changes in systems that negatively impact farmers," they stated.
Who is the Mental Health Summit for? It's for anyone dealing with anxiety or depression, it is for those with neurodivergent minds, and those feeling lost or lonely. The Summit is for you! The community across the agri and equine industries. This summit is about providing education and understanding, offering practical tools to manage mental health, and fostering a community of support.
